The Daily Mail reported that if London successfully bids for the 2029 World Track and Field Championships, West Ham United may face a three-week suspension at home.
Last week, the British government pledged £45 million to support the bidding plan for the London Stadium as the host venue. Unlike the London World Championships in early August 2017, the World Athletics Federation tends to schedule the 2029 event in September. This will conflict with the opening time of the 2029-2030 football league, forcing the Hammers to temporarily move away from home.
Although the World Championships schedule is only 9 days, the organizing committee still needs to renovate the track and field track of the London Stadium 4 days in advance and restore it to its original state after the game. If the event can be scheduled for international matches in September, the impact on West Ham will be minimized, but the club may still face continuous away games in the Premier League and potential European schedule adjustments.
British Athletics CEO Jack Buckner admitted that he would start consultations with West Ham before the bid was officially submitted in the summer. A spokesperson for the London Stadium said: "The 2017 World Championships brought more than 100 million pounds of economic benefits, and we are willing to fully coordinate with West Ham and other stakeholders."
