Have you ever been distracted when driving? Japan TOKYO FM Taiwan Program "JA Comprehensive Presentsなるほど! Traffic Safety" Recently, it explored the problem of "not paying attention to the front" and invited the safety consultant Sugimoto from the Tokyo branch of the Japan Automobile Alliance (JAF) to analyze the types of inattention to the front and the defense measures.

"Not paying attention ahead" leads to fatal accidents, accounting for 40% of the proportion

"Not paying attention ahead" refers to the driver's attention shifting from the road ahead to other things when he is driving. According to the 2023 (Reiwa 5) traffic accident statistics of Japan Police Department, 873 of the 2,177 car accidents (about 40%) were caused by the driver's inattention in the front, indicating that this behavior is closely related to serious traffic accidents. If a driver fails to focus on the road ahead at any time, it may lead to red lights, detours from the carriage, crashes into a guardrail, or even serious accidents such as chasing, collisions with pedestrians or bicycles. If you accidentally drive into the opposite lane, you may have a head-on conflict with the oncoming car, endangering your own and others' safety.

There are two types of inattention in front. Be careful of "visual offset" and "consciousness emptying"

Guide Sugimoto pointed out that "not paying attention in front" can be divided into two types:

External inattention in front (disappearing the flight)

This type of distracted driving is mainly because the driver moves the video line away from the road ahead, such as operating a mobile phone or navigation, paying attention to the entertainment system in the car, and looking at the scenery outside the window. In recent years, the cause of many traffic accidents is because drivers use mobile phones on their cars, which is what is called "side-opening slip".

Inside the inner self is not paying attention (sky flight)

Although the driver's eyes are still staring ahead, his attention has been dissipated, such as being confused while driving, thinking about private matters, and even entering an unconscious driving state. Sugimoto's question described this situation as "a deviation in consciousness" and is also extremely dangerous.

How to avoid not paying attention to the front? Experts suggest four major solutions

1. Avoid operating electronic equipment on the side of the car. If you need to operate navigation, mobile, air conditioner or audio, please park the car at a safe place before doing it. Even when red lights, it is not recommended that drivers check their phones to avoid affecting their focus. If there are passengers, please help operate the equipment to reduce the chance of driving and distraction.

2. Take a regular break to avoid mental distractions. Long-term driving can easily lead to decreased attention. It is recommended to park and rest every 2 hours. If you feel tired or have difficulty concentrating, you should avoid continuous driving and ensure your own safety.

3. Keep air circulation in the car and reduce fatigue. If the carbon dioxide concentration in the car is too high, it will cause drowsiness, headache, and decreased attention, which will affect driving safety. It is recommended to turn on the air circulation mode, or open the window slightly to increase air circulation and maintain driving focus.

4. Pay attention to your own mental and physical condition

Deficiency of sleep, excessive pressure or excessive fatigue may cause drivers to enter a dangerous driving state. You should evaluate your own condition before starting the car. If you find that you are not in good spirits, you should consider changing to public transportation to avoid danger. Guest Sugimoto reminded: "Before driving, please ask yourself whether your current body and mental state is suitable for driving?" Only by self-examination and good habits can you truly avoid the harm brought by inattention in the front and ensure the safety of your own and others' driving.
